구비전승의 현재와 미래 = The Present and Future of Oral Transmission

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the present and future of oral transmission. To this end, four things were examined: first, the scope of oral transmission; second, the categories of oral transmission that have been dealt with so far, as well as their present and future; third, the categories of oral transmission that need to be dealt with in the future, as well as their present and future; and lastly, additional theoretical issues that need to be investigated, which include the interrelations between oral culture, written culture, and electronic culture and the cultural prospects of each. As a result, the conclusion is reached that oral transmission is always engaged with the present. No matter how long the item of oral transmission may have been transmitted, if it is not performed in the here and now, then it cannot be said to be an item of oral transmission. Also, the methods of transmission as well as the content transmitted must change according to the changes in the environments of our lives. Just as languages are formed, grow, and become extinct, items of oral transmission, which are comprised of words, are also formed, grow, and become extinct. That is, items of oral transmission find their significance as constantly changing entities that exist in the present, not as fixed entities. Accordingly, the characteristics of items of oral transmission in the present-for example, the strengthened orientation toward communication (whether online or offline), the expressions or stories that briefly and skillfully use the traditional artistic forms of oral transmission (humorous stories or witticisms), the highlighting of such genres as rumors and stories concerning public figures or events and tales of personal experience (life stories, slice of life stories, etcetera), the similarities of the online environment and the environment of oral transmission such as the speed of transmission and brevity of the time period-will all be visible in the oral transmission of the future. Until now, we have enjoyed orality and oral literature in the space of real life, but now we stand on the brink of a new era, in which we can enjoy these same things in the virtual space known as the online world. Orality and oral literature are currently courting electronic media. The oral transmission of the future will be decided by the outcome of this courtship, and if we take into consideration the vitality and ability to blend that orality with the written media in the past, we can expect the aspects of oral transmission to continue into the future and emerge in an even more distinct form.
