A study of the doctrines in religion can be digged and developed by a deep faith ; and the faith can become the right kind when its doctrines are percisely studied and its practices are continued to perform. On the other hand, a religious life without any practice can hardly be carried on for a long time ; and a study of the religious doctrines unsupported by the public faith can only be a knowledge, if not a philosophy, and not a true study of the dogmas. Thus, the relationship between the study of the doctrines and that of the faith might be said to be even closer than that between the two wheels of a vehicle.
Since the trfansmission of the Avatamsaka doctrine from China to Korea in the Shilla dynasty, the Avatamsaka doctrine has taken up the central position in the school of the Buddhist doctrines. and, the reason is that there has always been the Avatamsaka Faith.
Because the faith is not only a private thing but an internal, immaterial feeling, it may be beyond the realms or the study or any knowledge. Herein lies the crux of the researches in the faith. When the personal and internal feeling or the faith is exteranlly exposed and revealed as a form of the group action, it is regarded as an assembly. And at the assembly of an internal, immaterial faith reveals itsesf to become one with the external action.
It has been understood that the form of the faith in any ear or in any nation can be investigated and/or analyzed through the assembly. This is because the assembly is one of the rare spheres which enables the spirit of the faith to be revealed exacftly as it is.
Grounded on this point, in this paper, I would like to re-collect and consolidate exemplars of the Avatamsaka assembly performed both in the Shilla and the Koryo dynasties in order to study the Avatamsaka Faith in Korean Buddhism. By analyzing those materials, I will not only observe all kinds kof the Avatamsaka Faith but also enumerate every possible practical performance done at the assembly in those days. In effect, it is the aim of this paper to go through with the characteristics of the Avatamsaka Faith revealed at the assembly, exemplifying the conventions of the two eras.
