The American evangelicalism began to appear in church history by distinguishing itself from fundamentalism in the early 1940s. The foundation of the National Association of Evangelicalism(1942), the opening of Fuller Theological Seminary(1947), the publication of Uneasy Conscience of Fundamentalism(1947)and Christianity Today(1956), and Billy Grahsm's New York Crusade(1957) were only a few of the symbolic examples of such a distinction. And Charles Fuller, Herold J. Ockenga, Carl Henry, and Billy Graham played essential roles in this course. At first, though they called themselves neo-evangelicals, they soon came to be known just simply as evangelicals. Then, how should we understand the relationship between Graham and evangelicalism? Simply speaking, Graham played a decisive role in the course of birth, growth, and maturity of (neo) evangelicalism as a new stream which was distinguished from both fundamentalism and liberalism. First of all, he privided a desicive cause and momentum for the separation between evangelicalism and fundamentalism. Secondly, Graham made a significant contribution to the expansion and promotion of the status of evangelicalism in America. Thirdly, he helped evangelicalism to spread out all over the world. Finally, he also made an important impact upon the development of evangelicalism in Korea. However, he also left behind not a few of legacies with which evangelicals have to struggle. First, his too close relationship with presidents made a negative mark on both his reputation and that of evangelicalism. Thus, evangelicals of this generation need to approach the relationship between church and state more carefully. Secondly, evangelicals should do their best to overcome the shackle of anti-intellectualism of which Graham was harshly accused. In fact, there is no reason that the Word of God clashes with a human intellect. Thirdly, evangelicals need to respond to the various social problems with more serious responsibility. The more the world is getting complicated, the more comprehensive and practical solution is asked for.
