교육사회학에서의 성 불평등 논의 = Education and gender inequality: Recent research trends in the sociology of education

The academic concerns for gender inequality in education has started since the late 1960s under the influence of women's movements, and many researchers have developed diverse themes and methodologies to deal with the women issues during the past 30 years. Gender inequality still prevails everywhere although various statistical indices show that gender gap in education radically decreased recently. In this article, I intend to trace the recent research trends on gender inequality in the field of sociology of education. Major journals, such as Sociology of Education, Korean Journal of Sociology of Education, British Journal of Sociology of Education, handbooks and literatures on gender in education published during the 1990s and 2000s were reviewed for this purpose. I mainly applied three sociological approaches ― structural approach, interaction approach, sociology of knowledge ― to categorize diverse researches in the field, and discussed the recent research findings and suggested implications for future research in each orientation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

교육에서 성 불평등 문제가 본격적으로 논의되기 시작한 것은 1960-70년대의 일로, 교육사회학에서 여성에 대한 연구의 역사는 그리 길지 않다. 그러나 지난 30여년간 성에 기초한 불평등이 교육체제를 통해 매개되는 방식을 규명하고자한 교육사회학의 연구들은 다양한 주제와 방법론을 발전시켜 왔다. 비록 최근에 성별 격차가 크게 줄어들고 있다는 증거들이 제시되고 있지만, 성은 여전히 사회적 불평등을 재생산하는 중요한 변인으로 존재하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 주로 1990년대 이후에 출판된 대표적인 교육사회학 학술잡지와 학술논문집 및 여성교육을 주제로 한 단행본들을 검토하여, 교육에서의 성 불평등 문제를 주제로 한 최근 연구들의 동향을 분석하였다. 여성의 교육적 현실이 복잡한 만큼 다양한 연구 주제들이 등장하고 있는 것이 사실이지만, 이 논문에서는 교육 불평등에 대한 교육사회학의 세 가지 주요 접근 방법― 교육의 사회경제적 효과와 노동시장에서의 불평등에 초점을 둔 연구, 교실에서의 상호작용과 개인들의 일상적 경험을 통해 불평등이 재생산되는 과정에 초점을 둔 연구, 그리고 교육과정과 교과지식의 성격에 대한 연구―에 따라 분류하고, 각 영역에서 최근의 대표적인 연구 성과들을 고찰하여, 앞으로의 연구 시사점을 제안하였다.
