Introduction: The prevalence of stroke continues to increase, and herbal medicine is regarded as implemental treatment for stroke. Recently, the number of related studies has gradually increased. However, there are few studies that have analyzed herbal medicine for stroke using bibliometric methods. This study aims to analyze the research about herbal medicine for stroke over the past decade by using bibliometric methods and presents the global trends in this area of research.
Methods: This study analyzed research on herbal medicine for stroke published between 2015 and 2024. The data was retrieved from the SCI-EXPANDED of the Web of Science database. Microsoft Office Excel and VOSviewer 1.6.20 were used to analyze and visualize data, focusing on publication year, research field, journal of publication, country of publication, author, affiliated institution, and keywords.
Result: A total of 629 articles were included in this study. The number of publications on herbal medicine for stroke has gradually increased over the past decade. These studies were mainly published in the fields of pharmacology pharmacy and integrative complementary medicine. The journals with the highest number of publications were Frontiers in Pharmacology and Journal of Ethnopharmacology. The countries with the greatest contributions were the People’s Republic of China and South Korea, while the institutions with the highest number of publications were Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The most frequently occurring keywords were 'stroke', 'ischemic stroke', 'traditional Chinese medicine', 'brain ischemia', 'oxidative stress’.
Conclusion: This study presents an overview of research trends in herbal medicine for stroke through bibliometric analysis. This approach to recent research trends provides new perspectives and insights for future studies. This study is expected to support further research in the field of stroke and herbal medicine.
