Comparative Analysis of Amu(N)to and Amu(N)na

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main concern of the paper is to explore an account for the contrasts between amu(N)to and amu(N)na in negation: amu(N)to is compatible with all the types of negation, but amu(N)na cannot occur with lexical negation; amu(N)to and its preceeding constituents cannot be focused in nun-negation, but amu(N)na and its preceeding constituents can; amu(N)to must precede amu(N)na. Based on the position that Korean NPI should be interpreted as a universal quantifier, I suggest their licensing conditions: amu(N)to should ‘immediately c-command’ TP[+neg] and amu(N)na should ‘immediately c-command’ TP[-neg] at LF. I claim that these contrasts follow from their opposite licensing conditions.
