This study suggests national reconciliation, deconstruction of divided consciousness, and democracy education as the three dimensions of reunification education in Korea. The joint communique in 2000 between South Korea and North Korea recognized the need for a new paradigm of integral and systematic reunification education. In response to such a need, this study proposes a paradigm with three elements: national reconciliation, deconstruction of divided consciousness, and democracy education.
First, the goal of national reconciliation is to turn a hostile relationship between the two Koreas into a relationship of reconciliation and cooperation.
Second, the purpose of deconstruction of divided consciousness is to nullify anti-communism in South Korea, antagonism between the South and North, and the political conflicts between Conservatives and Progressives within South Korea.
Third, democracy education emphasizes confidence in democratic values and system as the driving force in reunification, balance between nationalism and democracy, perception of the important issues in reunification, and practice of reunification culture in everyday life.
