아펜젤러 조난사건의 진상과 의미

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 최초의 감리교 선교사 아펜젤러(H. G. Appenzeller)의 죽음이 가져다 준역사적 충격과 의미는 남다르다. 하지만, 그동안 아펜젤러의 죽음에 대한 여러 가지 추측과 미화, 순교자 현양과 같은 다소 과장되거나 왜곡된 역사작업들이 진행하는 동안 그의 죽음에 대한 정확한 역사적 고증과 실증 작업은 충실하게 뒷받침되지 못했다. 이 글은 그동안 아펜젤러 선교사의 조난지점에 대한 논의와 연구에만 집중되었던 한계를 극복하고 사고 당시의 상황을 더욱 실증적이고 선명하게 규명하기 위해 연구, 작성되었다.
따라서 그동안 Korea Review나 그리피스(W. E. Griffis)의 아펜젤러 전기 등에만 의존해 전승되어지던 사고 당시의 상황에 대한 이해를 극복하고, 일본 측 언론들이 취재한 이 사건에 대한 상세보도들과 이후 진행된 민사소송 판결문 등의 일본 측 자료들을 면밀히 분석해 봄으로써 아펜젤러 조난사건의 실상을 새롭게 재조명하고자 했다.
이를 통해 그동안 논란의 여지가 많았던 사고위치 부터, 사고시간, 사고원인, 피해상황, 사고당시의 참상 묘사, 사고 직후의 조치 등의 사고당시의 세부적 정황을 새롭게 재구성했으며, 두 선박의 운항 노선 분석, 아펜젤러가 승선했던 구마가와마루에 대한 선박특성, 사고 후 7년 동안 지속된 아펜젤러 가족들의 소송과 재판 과정 등의 다양한 내용들이 새롭게 정리, 소개될 수 있었다.
이 연구를 통해 그동안 부정확한 역사적 사실들이 새롭게 규명되었으며, 아펜젤러의 죽음과 관련된 일부 허구적이며 비역사적인 측면을 확인할 수 있었다. 그동안 우리는 아펜젤러가 과연 친구를 구하다가 죽었는가 하는 문제나, 과연 순교한 것인가 아니면 순직한 것인가 하는 문제 등에만 너무 천착해 왔던 것은 아니었을까. 물론 그러한 문제들에 대해서도 충실히 조사하고 규명하는 노력들이 앞으로도 요청된다. 하지만 그보다 더 선행되어서 아펜젤러 생애의 마지막 현장과 실상에 대한 보다 실증적 연구가 전제될 때, 아펜젤러 죽음의 의미가 우리에게 더욱 생생하게 다가올 수 있다는 사실이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The historical shock and significance the death of Korea's first Methodist missionary H. G. Appenzeller gives us is unusual. However, various different assumptions, beautification and exaggerated or distorted historical works based on emphasis on martyrdom make the data lack in precise historical research and evidence backing up for clarification about his death. This essay aims to overcome the limits of the previous researches and discussions that were focussed on Appenzeller's location of death and try to shed light on the incident with more evidence and clarity.
This research therefore seeks to overcome the limited understandings of the situation during the incident that were transmitted from sources such as the Korea Review or the biography written by W. E. Griffis, and by closely analyzing the data from Japan's past media report on the specific event and the written judgement of the civil suit that proceeded after his death, seek to newly shed light on and have further understanding of the disaster.
With this means we introduce, arrange and closely look into various contents as the location, time, cause of death, the situation at the accident, description of the death, and management performed soon after the accident, which all newly reconstructs detailed series of events including the characteristics of the ship Kumakawamaru that Appenzeller had been aboard, and the family's civil suit procedure for the seven years after followed by his death
Through this research, previous indefinite historical data have been rectified and clarified, while checking upon the unhistorical and false facets of the incident of Appenzeller's death. It gives us notion that we may have been heavily focussing only on the issue of whether Appenzeller died while trying to save his friend, whether he has died a martyr, or died in harness. It is nevertheless necessary to identify and clarify such issues with care and is true that such research is further required. However, previous to that, if a more verifying study of the actual scene of the accident is set forth beforehand, the meaning of Appenzeller's death will be understood with more vividness and depth.
