    This study set out to investigate the 180 or more pits, which were recently examined and estimated as traps, in Cheonjeonri and Geoduri of the Yeongseo regions in Gangwon. It also aimed to identify their characters and offer some basic data for study on traps.
    The pits identified in the Cheonjeonri and Geoduri are believed to be traps in terms of the characters, locations, distribution, forms and structures and internal facilities based on the ethnographic and folk data.
    Traps are categorized into the plain and hill traps according to the location. Those ones in Cheonjeonri and Geoduri belong to the plain category. The pits form several solid rows, are high in density, and narrow in the distribution gaps. They are oval on the plane, Y- or V-shaped on the section, and are characterized by the spears to kill animals at the bottom. Since it's highly likely that the plain traps were near a settlement or farming land, they must have been built in order to prevent damages on the crops.
    Unlike the plain traps, the hill traps were usually built on the shoreline or incline. They are long oval on the plane and Y-shaped on the section. It's common that there were no facilities at all at the bottom. There were some cases where they discovered some holes for columns to build an obstacle inside. The hill traps must have been built in order to capture animals alive given the internal structure.
    The traps in Cheonjeonri and Geoduri seem to have been built during the Bronze Age considering the artifacts excavated and duplicative relations. Given their locations and distributions and despite the high density, it's likely that they were used as an inducement strategy rather than driving animals into them. Thus the traps must have appeared during the Bronze Age when settlement and farming began in full-scale and by the need to making hunting more stable and efficient than those highly flexible hunting traditions before.
