This article examines the production background of the Three-Buddha Assembly Painting (Samsebulhoedo) enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Jikjisa Temple, a work distinguished by its exceptional formal and aesthetic accomplishment within late Joseon Buddhist painting, and reassesses the artistic capabilities of the leading monk-painter (suhwaseung) Segwan, who directed its execution.
During the seventeenth century, Jikjisa underwent extensive temple reconstruction and large-scale dancheong (decorative polychrome painting) projects. In this context, successive generations of leading monk-painters—Takwi, Seongjing, and Segwan—emerged from the temple. The formation of this lineage of suhwaseung was closely connected to the Byeogam monastic lineage group of the Moun Jineon tradition, which played a central role in overseeing Buddhist construction projects at Jikjisa. During Segwan’s active period, the eminent monk Gyeongwol Taegam served as a principal patron and director of these undertakings.
The Three-Buddha Assembly Painting of Jikjisa represents a culmination of the collective capabilities of the Hwangaksan monk-painter group under Segwan’s leadership. This study analyzes its formal characteristics and systematic mode of production. In particular, by examining the large circular motif in the lower section of the Assembly at Vulture Peak panel and the stylistic distinctions among the three panels, the article proposes differentiated authorship. The Bhaisajyaguru Assembly and Amitābha Assembly panels, for which the underdrawing artist (the painter responsible for preparing the preliminary sketch) is identified, likely reflect the stylistic idiom of Wolin, whereas the Assembly at Vulture Peak panel more directly embodies Segwan’s painterly manner.
Furthermore, the large circular motif is interpreted as a pictorial representation of the Junjicheonwon painting—an image of the Junjicheonwon diagram—listed among consecration objects used in rituals that confer sacred efficacy upon the Buddha’s image. This interpretation sheds light on the relationship between pictorial program and consecration practice in late Joseon Buddhist art.
