As the average life expectancy of humans increases due to advances in medical technology around the world, efforts and interest in managing health more efficiently and improving standards are increasing. As a result, the importance of medical checkups is emphasized because they can increase the effectiveness of treatment and reduce medical expenses by detecting diseases early through medical checkups.
Currently, the rate of medical examinations in Korea has been on the rise every year to 76.9%, but it is still 30%.This study aims to provide information necessary to improve the rate of progression of medical examinations in the future by identifying factors that affect whether or not Korea has a medical examination.
The study used raw data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016-2018) and selected 17,295 people from 24,269 people under 19 years of age and 356 cases of missing major variables. The analysis focused on demographic factors, socioeconomic factors, disease factors, health shape factors, and medical use factors that affect whether a medical examination is performed or not. The research method used a weighted complex sample analysis method using the SPSS 25.0 program, and chi-square analysis was used to analyze differences in health examination yield depending on the characteristics of the subjects. To analyze the factors that affect health examination resin, we use simple logistic regression and multi-logistic regression.
The main findings are summarized as follows.
First, in demographic factors, men had a higher rate of medical examination than women, and the older they were, the higher the rate of medical examination.
Second, in socioeconomic factors, the higher the level of education and the higher the level of health insurance among the types of health insurance, the higher the income level, and the higher the rate of employment in economic activities.
Third, in the case of diabetes and high blood pressure in the setting and disease factors, there was no difference in the rate of medical examination depending on the disease.
Fourth, in the case of non-smokers in health type factors, if the weight is normal, and if the subjective health condition is good, the rate of medical examination was high.
Fifth, the rate of promotion for medical examinations was high when outpatient and hospitalization of medical institutions were used in medical use factors.
Overall, there were demographic factors (gender and age), socioeconomic factors (health insurance type, education level, income level, economic activity status), health type factors (smoking, obesity, subjective health conditions), medical use factors (two weeks of outpatient use, one year of hospitalization).
This study is meaningful as it looked at the factors that affect whether or not a medical examination is carried out based on the representative data of the National Health and Nutrition Survey. In order to improve the rate of medical examinations at the national level in the future, it is believed that socioeconomic support and promotion of medical examinations will be needed for those with low health examination rates.
