Purpose : This study aims to highlight the role and necessity of transition finance in achieving carbon neutrality in the shipping industry and to propose a tailored model and policy framework to promote effective decarbonization in Korea.
Research design, data, methodology : This study analyzes the policies of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the European Union (EU), and global transition finance cases, along with the limitations of Korea's shipping industry, and proposes policy improvements based on these findings.
Results : This study identifies the need for transition finance in response to the carbon-intensive nature of the shipping industry, examines the limitations of domestic systems, analyzes cases from the EU and Japan, and proposes the establishment of a clear classification system and a public-private financial ecosystem as policy priorities.
Conclusions : This study emphasizes transition finance as a strategic tool for achieving carbon neutrality and proposes the need for collaboration among the government, financial institutions, and industry, along with the establishment of a reliable institutional framework to support the decarbonization of the shipping sector.
