Two aspects of the burgeoning literature on the quality of child care are reviewed. The first section deals with defining quality of child care that include two approach, the one evaluative, the other analytic and descriptive. Second, research on the measurement of quality of child care and methodological issues are outlined. Narrative attempts at integrating and reviewing the research on quality of child care generally results in confusing, contradictory, and equivocal results. The new perspectives on the quality of child care rely on more ecological concepts with context-based ideas. In a concluding section, the following three points are discussed. First, in order to develop more reliable and valid assessment instrument, more thorough theoretical and empirical investigations are necessary. Second, based on Korean culture, it is necessary to propose a culturally appropriate redefine and reassessment of child care quality. Third, it is important for research to identify the extend to which specific child care practices, associated with different developmental domains, serve to enhance or impeded the overall development of children in specific family background and society.
