고구려의 천문 문화와 그 역사적 계승 : 고려의 천문학과 유물자료를 중심으로_결과보고서

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 고구려 천문의 역사적 계승 관계를 알아보기 위하여 고려시대의 유물자료 속에 나타나 있는 천문 내용을 분석한 작업이다. 이를 통하여 고구려의 문화가 고려로 이어지고 있는 관계를 분명하게 드러내어, 고구려가 우리의 한국문화사를 구성하는 중요한 문화적 원천으로 작동되어 왔음을 밝힘으로써, 현재 진행되고 있는 중국의 동북공정에 대하여 타당하고도 설득력 있는 대응논리 제고에 일조를 할 것이라 전망된다.
고구려는 지금까지 발견된 수많은 벽화고분들로 인하여 고구려 당시의 생생한 생활풍속과 문화 양식을 유감없이 드러내고 있다. 그 중에서 고구려 벽화 속에 상당한 수량으로 그려져 있는 벽화 천문도는 당시 동아시아 천문학사 차원에서 차지하는 비중이 높을 뿐만 아니라, 고구려 이후 한국사 속에 면면히 이어지는 전통천문의 유구한 기반을 읽어내는 기저가 된다.
이러한 기반을 배경으로 삼아 본 발표문에서는 고려시대의 왕릉과 일반 묘실벽화에서 고구려와 유사한 천문시스템을 구축하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 고려는 고구려와 마찬가지로 초기 왕릉부터 벽화무덤을 그리는 양식을 유행시켰다. 고려의 건국시조인 태조 왕건릉에서부터 고구려의 천문벽화시스템과 유사하게 천정석에는 천문도를 그렸고, 사방벽면에는 사신도(四神圖) 벽화를 그렸다. 현재까지 고려 474년간 34왕 중 벽화가 확인된 왕릉이 10기에 이르는데, 흥미롭게도 이들 10기 중에서 충정왕의 총릉(聰陵)을 제외하고는 한결같이 천정에 천문성수도를 그려놓았다. 이는 벽화묘이면 거의 천문도를 능묘제도로 사용하였다는 말이 된다. 귀족들의 벽화무덤까지 합하면 고려의 벽화능묘는 총 22기에 이르는데, 그 중 17기 능묘에서 천문도가 확인되고 있다.
내용상 고구려와 비교할 때, 고구려 벽화가 사방위 관점의 일월-사신-사숙도(四宿圖) 천문시스템에 주력한 것에 대하여, 고려는 전천(全天) 관점의 일월-중궁(북극3성과 북두7성)-이십팔수 천문시스템을 마련하였다고 요약된다. 벽화 속에서 사신도 제재가 약화되는 가운데, 천문관측의 중심이 되는 북극성의 중궁과 적경(赤經) 역할을 하는 적도 이십팔수 시스템이 강조되어 있는 것이다. 여기서 고구려가 멸망한 지 300년을 지나고서도 고구려식 북극성이었던 북극3성 별자리가 고려의 능묘와 석관묘 등에서 지속적으로 재등장하고 있는 점은 고구려 천문이 고려에 계승되었음을 역사적으로 분명하게 승인시켜내는 매우 중요한 대목으로 파악되었다.
이와같이 본 연구에서는 고려시대 천문 자료의 상태와 내용을 자세히 정리하면서, 그 천문도의 내용과 천문 시스템에 대하여 일일이 분석하였다. 고려의 천문 체계를 드러내려는 본 논문의 결과들은 한국문화사 속에서 고구려 천문학의 역사적 그리고 문화적 계승 관계를 더욱 제고케 하는 성과라 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this work, I studied Koryo dynasty's culture of astronomy and cosmology through several star charts found on Koryo muraltombs, stone coffins and soon.
It is difficult to find Koryo's research results about relic star charts, mural pictures of star chart through present Korean academic field. In this point I think this my study will be important to understand and research Koryo's astronomy and cosmology.
To myr esult of analysis of Koryo relic data, I got to confirm that number of muraltombs constructed during Koryo dynasty periods counted 22 tombs, which contain 10 tombs of Koryo Kings. I found that nine tombs among the King's muraltombs contained the star charts on the ceiling stone, too. Several Koryo murals depicted the Four Guardian Deitieson the wall painting, containing
Koryo founder, King Taejo Wang-gun royal tomb. These characters are similar to those of Koguryo's mural paintings. Because Koguryian also loved to depict the Four Guardian Deities on the wall and the constellation pictures on the ceiling.
In addition to this, we can also find the Kogurian style of star charts on the many tombs of Koryo murals. Especially, the polar constellation has a role of
center of night sky, so that becomes a constellation standard for all observation. The shapes of just this polar constellation are quite different both Koguryo and old China.
Kogurian people has created three connected stars for describing polar
constellation, but ancient Chinese during periods from Han dynasty to Tang
dynasty has described five connected stars. This point is very important for
comparative study of each other's astronomical culture. By the way, the Three
Polar constellations such as Kogurian style are widely found on the Koryo's mural paintings, moreover on the Koryo's stone coffin paintings.
This fact show us certainly that the astronomy of Koguryo tradition succeeded to Koryo dynasty. Like this, my analysis of Koryo's astronomy in this study will enhance much more the academic understanding of not only Korea history of astronomical culture but also historical-cultural values and roles of Koguryo.
