美國의 農民小說 硏究 = A Study on American Novels of the Soil

In this article, I indended to elucidate the characteristics of American novels of the soil
Therefore, I analyzed closely the esthetic structure of Cather's My Antonia, Caldwell's Tobacco Road, and Steimbeck's The Grapes of Wrath which are the masterpieces of American Novels of the Soil.
1) Tobacco Road has a tragic plot, but My Antonia & The Grapes of Wrath show comedc plots.
2) The hero of Tobacco Road was created as a stupid and enervate peasantry, but the heroines of My Antoonia and The Grapes of Wrath were created as characters who have a will of iron and strenuous vitality.
3) The setting of My Antonia is Nebraska in the time of the reclamation, and that of Tobacco Road is Georgia in industrial days and that of The Grapes of Wrath is a slack times.
To refer from the theme on the basis of the analyzed facts, Tobacco Road was subject to the severe attachment and reliance on the ground, but My Antonia and The Grapes of Wrath were subject to the strong vitality.
The results from the examination of literary devices to express the theme effectually as follows:
1) Suggestive and symbolic titles are used.
2) The author selected external and internal points of view and described correctry their characters and settings.
3) By the individual styles, the author made a various tone.
As is show in the above, we found the literary results of American Nnonvels of the soil as follows:
First, American novels of the soil presented the real and ideal of American peasantly.
Second, they expressed the pioneer spirit, strenuous vitality, and the dignity of life.
Third, they expressed high quality from individual style.
