본 연구는 많은 번역 성경이 시편 39:7(6)의 첼렘(םלצ)을 “형상”이 아니 라 “그림자”로 번역한다는 점에 착안하여, 특히 어원의 측면에서 그 근거가 합당한지 살펴본다. 비교 셈어학의 관점에서, 시 39:7(6)에 나오는 첼렘의 어원 이 그림자의 어원이기도 한 III ללצ과 뿌리가 같다거나, 어둠을 의미하는 II םלצ에서 왔기 때문에 쉽게 그림자라는 의미로 확장되었을 거라는 주장들은 근거가 약하다. 특히 II םלצ은 아카드어나 아랍어보다 히브리어와 더 가까운 북서 셈어에서 잘 나타나지 않는다. 흔히 인용되는 우가릿 문헌 RS 34.126도 II םלצ의 존재를 증명하지 못한다. 우가릿어를 포함한 북서 셈어에서 II םלצ을 찾을 수 없다면, 논쟁의 여지가 있는 소수의 구약 본문에서 םלצ이 II םלצ으로 부터 파생되었을 가능성은 매우 낮다. 따라서, 시 39:7(6)의 םלצ은 그림자 외에 다른 번역을 찾거나, 혹은 그림자라는 번역을 변호할 다른 설명이 필요하다.

This study examines whether the translation of the Hebrew term םלצ (ṣelem) in Psalm 39:7(6) as “shadow” rather than “image” is justi- fied, particularly from an etymological perspective. From the view- point of comparative Semitics, the arguments suggesting that the root םלצ in Psalm 39:7(6) is the same as that of “shadow” in the root III ללצ, or that it derives from II םלצ, which means “darkness,” and therefore could easily extend to mean “shadow,” are weak. Notably, the root II םלצ is not well-attested in Northwest Semitic languages more closely related to Hebrew than Akkadian or Arabic. Even the frequently cited Ugaritic text RS 34.126 fails to confirm the existence of II םלצ. If II םלצ cannot be found in Northwest Semitic languages, including Ugaritic, then the possibility that the term םלצ in a few disputed Old Testament passages is derived from II םלצ is highly unlikely. Consequently, the term םלצ in Psalm 39:7(6) either requires an alternative translation to “shadow” or a different explanation to justify the translation as “shadow.”
