V&A Exhibition Road Quarter의 매개공간 디자인 전략 연구 = A study on the design strategies for mediating spaces in the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 영국 본 연구는 영국 런던의 V&A Exhibition Road Quarter를 대상으로 역사적 뮤지엄 증축에 나타나는 매개공간의 디자인 전략을 분석한다. 현대 뮤지엄의 역할이 도시와 사회, 관람자 경험을 연결하는 문화적 플랫폼으로 확장됨에 따라, 증축은 공간 확보를 넘어 경계와 동선, 공공성, 기억을 조정하는 계획 행위로 이해될 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 V&A ERQ를 비기념비적 확장, 시간의 중첩과 경계의 재구성, 재현적 표피, 동선과 전이 시퀀스의 관점에서 분석하였다. 그 결과, 지하화와 비움을 통해 기존 건축과의 충돌을 줄이고, 폐쇄적 경계를 도시와 연결하는 공공영역으로 전환하였음을 확인하였다. 또한 표피와 동선은 과거와 현재, 지상과 지하, 도시와 전시공간의 관계를 조직한다. 이를 통해 매개공간이 장소성, 시간성, 공공성, 관람 경험을 통합하는 핵심 디자인 전략임을 확인하였다.런던의 V&A Exhibition Road Quarter를 대상으로 역사적 뮤지엄 증축에 나타나는 매개공간의 디자인 전략을 분석한다. 현대 뮤지엄의 역할이 도시와 사회, 관람자 경험을 연결하는 문화적 플랫폼으로 확장됨에 따라, 증축은 공간 확보를 넘어 경계와 동선, 공공성, 기억을 조정하는 계획 행위로 이해될 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 V&A ERQ를 비기념비적 확장, 시간의 중첩과 경계의 재구성, 재현적 표피, 동선과 전이 시퀀스의 관점에서 분석하였다. 그 결과, 지하화와 비움을 통해 기존 건축과의 충돌을 줄이고, 폐쇄적 경계를 도시와 연결하는 공공영역으로 전환하였음을 확인하였다. 또한 표피와 동선은 과거와 현재, 지상과 지하, 도시와 전시공간의 관계를 조직한다. 이를 통해 매개공간이 장소성, 시간성, 공공성, 관람 경험을 통합하는 핵심 디자인 전략임을 확인하였다.

This study analyzes the design strategies of mediating spaces in the expansion of a historic museum through the case of the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter in London, United Kingdom. As the role of contemporary museums has expanded into that of cultural platforms connecting the city, society, and visitor experience, museum expansion needs to be understood not merely as the provision of additional space, but as a planning act that reconfigures boundaries, circulation, publicness, and memory. This study examines the V&A ERQ from the perspectives of non-monumental expansion, the layering of time and boundary reconfiguration, representational surfaces, circulation and transitional sequences. The analysis shows that the project reduces visual conflict with the existing museum through underground development and spatial voids, while transforming a closed boundary into a public realm connected to the city. Its surfaces and circulation system also organize relationships between past and present, aboveground and underground spaces, and the city and exhibition spaces. The findings demonstrate that mediating spaces function as a key design strategy for integrating sense of place, temporality, publicness, and visitor experience in the expansion of historic museums.
