This study aims to analyze how authorship and division of labor are distributed across functional domains in exhibition proposals produced with generative AI, and to identify the differences between course-based student proposals and professional proposals. To this end, content analysis was conducted on three student proposals and three professional proposals by distinguishing three common domains—research and analysis, concept and narrative, and spatial visualization—and one professional-only extended domain, implementation and operations. Each component was coded into four categories: AI-only generation, human–AI collaborative generation, human revision of AI output, and human-only production. The results showed that student proposals had higher proportions of AI-only generation and human–AI collaborative generation, whereas professional proposals showed relatively higher proportions of human-only production and human revision of AI-generated output. The largest difference appeared in the spatial visualization domain, where collaborative generation was more prominent in student proposals, while direct human production and revision were more prominent in professional proposals. These findings suggest that generative AI functions as a resource for cognitive offloading and distributed cognition in educational contexts, whereas in professional contexts it operates as an auxiliary resource that is more strongly regulated through metacognitive monitoring and creative expertise. This study is significant in that it explains generative AI use not in terms of the superiority of outputs, but in terms of differences in role distribution across functional domains, and offers implications for understanding the gap between exhibition design education and professional practice.
