The report that the overall Korean university students' well-being is relatively lower than that of other countries' raises a question about the present state of Korean students' well-being and related factors. The subjective well-being means the evaluation of an individual's life, and the evaluation includes both the cognitive factors which evaluate the life satisfaction and emotional factors about positive- or negative emotion.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of independent and interdependent self-construal types and self-control on the university students' well-being. To verify this purpose a questionnaire using indices of cultural self-construal, self-control and subjective well-being for the subjects of 300 university students was conducted.
Four groups were formed on the basis of the medians of independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal which are cultural self-construal subtypes, and then differences among the groups in their subjective well-being according to the relative level of self-construal types were examined using ANOVA. The subjective well-being in the groups of high-independent and high-dependent self-construals was the highest, whereas that in the groups of low-independent and low-dependent was the lowest. In addition the analysis of the effects of each cultural self-construal type on the subjective well-being using the standard polynomial regression method revealed that interdependent self-construal increases the positive emotion and life satisfaction, and decreases the negative emotion in the life, but the independent self-construal did not affect the positive emotion significantly and increases the negative emotion and life satisfaction. The analysis of the effects of the self-control on the subjective well-being using the standard linear regression method revealed that the self-control increased the positive emotion and life satisfaction of the subjective well-being and decreased the negative emotion. Finally, the Stepwise Multiple regression analysis to identify the most affecting factor on the subjective well-being among cultural self-construal types and self-control showed that the self-control forecasted the most the subjective well-being at overall level.
These results implicate the effects of the cultural self-construal types, each cultural self-construal and self-control according to relative level on the subjective well-being.
Based on these results of the study were discussed the implication of effects of the cultural self-construal types and self-control on the subjective well-being, limits of this study and recommendations for further studies.
