This study examines South Korean high school teachers’ lived experiences, ethical orientations, and evolving subjectivities as they encounter and make sense of the world within the context of Global Citizenship Education (GCED). Responding to the tendency in existing scholarship to evaluate Korean GCED practices through Western-centered theoretical standards—often framing them as insufficiently critical or deficient—this study seeks to redress epistemic and hermeneutical injustice by offering a more contextually grounded interpretation of teachers’ lived practices through a decolonial orientation, particularly by inter-referencing locally grounded intellectual and ethical resources in line with Asia as Method.
Adopting a qualitative narrative research approach, the study explores (1) what motivates South Korean high school teachers to engage with GCED, and (2) what possibilities and constraints emerge from their GCED practices. Findings, drawn from the narratives of four public high school teachers in South Korea—each working in different school contexts and holding distinct personal histories, career trajectories, and lived experiences—show how their stories trace divergent ways of recognizing social inequities while also revealing a shared ethical orientation. Across their personal growth and professional encounters, the teachers described moments that challenged the perceived fairness of the status quo, and made visible the structural inequities shaping their own and their students’ lives. These narrative trajectories illuminate shifts not only in how teachers understood injustice but also in how they understood themselves as educators, marking epistemic changes that deepened into ontological transformations.
Despite their differences, the teachers commonly drew on Confucian–East Asian sensibilities such as humility, self-cultivation, and relational harmony to make sense of injustice and to orient their pedagogical commitments. Humility appeared not as passive modesty but as a disciplined practice of self-questioning and self-interruption; self-cultivation involved cycles of self-emptying and ethical reorientation; and relational harmony shaped how teachers navigated vulnerable classroom situations with care. These sensibilities simultaneously offered moral resources for engaging with GCED and introduced limits when the desire to preserve relational attunement constrained more structural critiques. Their narratives also disclosed a subtle decolonial instinct—a resistant orientation toward singular centers of authority—alongside inherited assumptions shaped by internal colonial logics, including majority-centered empathy.
The study challenges the reliance on Western-centric interpretive norms by positioning Korean historical, cultural, and ethical resources as legitimate sites of knowledge production. In doing so, it affirms the interpretive autonomy of Korean GCED practices, enabling more contextually grounded, analytically rich, and epistemically just interpretations of teachers’ work. This approach allows for a more nuanced analysis of teacher agency in GCED, while also illuminating the structural and epistemic conditions necessary to sustain and expand meaningful GCED engagement within Korean schooling.
