This article examines the narrative mode in Kim Mella’s The Book of Joy (2024), focusing on how insect narrators construct the relationship between two women, Willow and Horang, through the lens of Bruno Latour’s mode of existence of the religious ([REL]). The insect narrators—springtails, mosquitoes, and spiders—read accumulated records produced by numerous arthropods and rearticulate them through their own sensory modes and narrative strategies. This study understands such writing as a practice of address that operates across human and nonhuman relations.
According to Latour, religious speech is not the transmission of belief but a performative act that reactivates relations by addressing those from whom one has become separated. From this perspective, the narration of the insect figures displaces anthropocentric modes of perception and reconfigures the conditions under which relations are formed and sustained.
The analysis proceeds in three dimensions. First, the renaming of humans as “two-footed thumbs” shifts the center of narration and repositions humans within the perspective of nonhuman others. Second, the insects’ recording practices follow sensory traces and material signs, forming a narrative mode that sustains the relationship between the two protagonists. Third, “listening” emerges as a response to address, functioning as a mode that maintains relational continuity.
This article argues that The Book of Joy presents love not as an internal emotion but as a relational practice sustained through responsiveness to the condition of others. In this process, non-reproduction is articulated as an ethical stance that resists the logic of expansion and competition, instead orienting toward the maintenance of existing relations. Love, in this sense, begins with address, continues through response, and takes shape as a mode of existence that sustains relational life across human and nonhuman boundaries.
