부문별 전력소비를 이용한 경기지수 구축 = Bayesian Model and Electricity Consumption: A Two-Stage Approach to Coincident and Leading Indicators

국문 초록 (Abstract)

거시변수들의 집계과정은 일정한 시차를 필요로 하므로 이들 변수들로부터 경기상황에 대한 정보를 얻기 위해서는 상당한 시간이 필요하게 된다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 시차문제를 해결하기 위해 부문별 (산업, 상업, 가정) 전력소비를 이용하여 경기동행 및 선행지수의 구축을 시도하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 동태은닉공통인자모형을 이용하여 부문별 전력소비로부터 경기상황에 관한 정보를 추출하였다. 그러나 부문별 전력소비의 집계 역시 1개월의 시차를 가지므로 실시간으로 집계될 수 있는 전력 발전량을 이용하여 부문별 전력소비를 예측한후, 이들 예측치를 포함시킨 전력소비량으로부터 경기동행 및 선행지수를 구축하는 2단계 베이지안 추정법을 시도하였다.

Using monthly electricity consumption data, we constructed a Bayesian model to calculate coincident and leading economic indicators. The dynamic latent common factor model is used to measure the current conditions of the economy, as revealed by electricity consumption across sectors. However, as aggregation of electricity consumption has a one month time lag, we developed a two-stage Bayesian estimation procedure in which forecasting electricity consumption and extracting the common factor are systematically implemented. We applied our method to the Korean economy and found that our experimental indicators can not only trace but also describe the intricate phases of the Korean business cycle.
