연령주의(Ageism) 관점을 통한 노년의 이해 = The change in the status of older people in Korea in terms of ageism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국 노인에 대한 사회적 이해를 위해서 기존의 노년을 바라보는 윤리적이고 당위적 가치의 한계를 인정하고 현재 한국 사회의 노인을 이해하기 위해 연령주의라는 분석틀을 주목해본다. 지금까지 한국에서는 연령주의가 노인의 사회적 상황을 설명하고 현상을 파악하기 위한 분석틀로서 기초 논의가 부족하였다. 연령주의가 등장하게 된 사회구조적 맥락에 대한 차분한 검토를 통해서 한국적 상황에의 적용을 타진해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 노인에 대한 사회적 이해를 위해 서구에서 시작된 연령주의 논의의 전개와 그 배경으로써 근대화, 복지국가와 은퇴, 그리고 생애단계의 변화, 연령주의와 노년기의 관계를 고찰해본다. 더불어 노인의 생활세계의 주요한 제측면을 연령주의 관점에서 살펴본다. 서구에서 비롯된 노년의 사회적 이해 방식인 연령주의는 노인에 대한 편견과 부정적 관념들이 노인에 대한 차별과 억압으로 이어져서 구조적 관계로 굳어졌다는 주장에 이르렀다. 근대화에 따른 노인의 사회적 지위 변화, 복지국가와 은퇴 제도의 등장에 따른 노년기의 사회적 재구성, 그리고 생애발달단계의 변화에 따른 노인 역할과 연대기적 연령의 괴리 등 노년기에 대한 중요한 논의들을 살펴보는 과정에서 연령주의가 등장하고 사회적으로 구조화된 관계로 형성되는 배경을 알게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 연령주의가 노년기의 일과 가족 그리고 사회·문화 속에서 어떻게 드러나고 있는지 살펴보았다. 노동시장에서는 임금과 노동지위에서 연령차별로 나타나며, 노인에 대한 부양부담과 의존성, 부정적 감정들이 노인과의 갈등으로 이어져 학대 상황에 이를 수 있는 불안한 가족관계를 통해 세대 통합을 어렵게 하는 연령주의를 보여준다. 그리고 사회·문화적으로 노인에 대한 부정적 이미지가 형성되는 현실을 연령주의로 파악할 수 있었다. 지금까지 한국 노인의 변화에 대한 주장들은 그 바탕에 연령주의적 분석이 존재한다. 다만 연령주의적 시각을 통한 분석적인 내용이라기보다는, 과거 전통적 가치에 의한 노년기에 대한 긍정으로부터 노년기의 부정적 인식으로의 급격한 전환에 대한 세태 변화를 기술한 것이다. 따라서 앞으로 한국 사회의 노년기에 연령주의가 구조적 관계로 나타나고 있는 구체적이고 체계적인 상황을 종합적으로 파악하기 위한 경험적인 연구가 진행될 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Ageism has been discussed so far as an important issue related to the social perspective toward aging. Ageism functions as an ideology to justify social inequality which enables the society to exclude a group of certain age from social opportunities and resources on purpose on the basis of chronological age. Ageism is working in many aspects of older people’s lives and how it works determines status change of older people. The way ageism functions, therefore, represents changes in the lives of older people in society. In the discussion of ageism in western society, industrialization has been pointed out as the main factor which decided ageism and status of older people. As modernization progresses, especially, it is reported that overall status of older people has been downgraded. In this context, investigating how ageism, as an important social phenomenon of the elderly group, is working in Korea will be the most pivotal research in gerontology, since Korea has experienced the powerful impact of industrialization and modernization through its long established Confucian and patriarchal family system. Furthermore, by examining the change in the status of older people in Korea in terms of ageism, we can understand the two fold structure related to the dominant inequality in Korean society. It is also necessary to conduct in-depth study on how various factors concerning ageism, identified from previous researches, are structured in reality and working with existing social characteristics in Korean society.
