This paper examines the nature of polysemy and the relatedness of meanings of polysemous expressions in terms of cognitive linguistics. Polysemy is a linguistic in phenomenon in which a specific expression can be interpreted as denoting several related meanings. We need some concepts in order to make explicit the nature of polysemy. The first is family resemblance. The similarity of the meanings of polysemous expressions is a kind of resemblance that the members of a family bear. The second is prototype. Among the various meanings of polysemous expressions, one is prototypical, and the others are unprototypical. The third is image schema. All the meanings of polysemous expressions share a common image schema. The fourth is cognitive processes, especially metaphor and metonymy which are focused in this paper. In metaphor, there are two conceptual domains, and one is understood in terms of the other. Metonymy operating in a single domain refers to a general cognitive ability that enables speakers to represent a specific object as a whole or its aspects by focusing upon a salient aspect of the object.
