미군 점령기 일본 미디어를 통한 민주주의관의 보급과 냉전 자유주의 - 교과서 『민주주의』의 미디어믹스 <새로운 길> = The Mass-Mediated View of Democracy and Cold War Liberalism in Occupied Japan: The New Road, The Media Mix of The Primer of Democracy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 탈전후 경향에 대항해 일본의 진보 리버럴 지식인들이 재조명하곤 하는 민주주의관의 대중화 과정과, 그 근본적인 전제 및 특징을 아시아·태평양 전쟁에서의 패전과 냉전이 교차한 일본 현대사의 맥락에 비추어 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
이 관점이 성립하고 대중화한 미군 점령기에 초점을 맞추며, 당대 미디어를 통한 민주주의관의 보급과 수용에 주목한다. 구체적으로는 미일 합작의 사회과 교과서 『민주주의』 (1948-1949)의 내용을 활용한 미디어믹스 사례인 NHK 연속 방송극 <새로운 길>(新し い道)의 제1부(1949. 11.-1950. 5.)를 분석한다. 이러한 역사화를 통해 이 민주주의관이냉전 자유주의에 기초하고 있음을 밝힌다.

This article examines the perception of democracy that Japanese progressive liberal intellectuals often advocate against the backdrop of the post-postwar trend. It aims to clarify the fundamental premises and characteristics of this perception in the context of the aftermath of the Asia-Pacific War and the rise of the Cold War. The study focuses on the U.S. occupation period, during which this perception was established, as well as the role of media in disseminating this specific view. It analyzes the first season of the NHK documentary drama The New Road (1949-1950), the media mix of the Japan’s first postwar textbook on democracy, The Primer of Democracy. This historicization reveals that the democracy popularized by the show was rooted in Cold War liberalism.
