My purpose in this paper is to study theme and the image of Human beings depicted in 「Brighton Rocks」and 「The power and the Glory」. Green is surely one of the most literary of contemporary novelists. His books are full of allusions to other writes, past and present, the famous and the long forgotton. In the decade of the war he made his reputation as a major catholic novelist, added Mexico and west Africa to his fictional territory. The write have chosen two of his works which represent the writers who most influenced Greene, and some of his main areas of interest-Catholic eccentries, sense of sins, themes and the image of Human beings. It is evident from his autographical writings that Green's imagination is based on childhood experience many years before his conversion to Catholicism. He is especially concerned with the corruption of man and the strangeness of God's mercy, which appears at unlikely moments, often to people whose lives are not conventionally religious or moral. His work expresses apersonal vision. Greene has frequently referred to his views on the role of the writer. "The best artists are realistic and paint life as it is." although he has been very outspoken on political issue, he cannot be judged by allegiance, for they are not determined by belief in any particular ideology. He has always been committed writer. He began with socialist sympathies. His trip to Mexico led to a period of Catholic commitment. He now considers himself only as a recruit to the foreign. Legion as far as the church is concerned. 「The power and the Glory」was condemned by the church because it was not considered orthodox in its presentation of Catholic beliefs. It is also concerned with the omnipresense of God in daily life, and the mysterious power of God's grace, of which the sinner is often more aware than the good man. Through the lives of the character, and implied parallels and contrasts among them, the novel illustrates these themes. A physical frontier occurs in many Greene novels: Pinkie disputes territorial claims with a rival gang in the wastland Brighton; the Mexican priest in 「The power and the Glory」tastes momentary peace on one side of the border before being drawn back to capture and a firing squad. But more important than the mere presense of border is the sense of conflicting allegiance that it breeds. With a headmaster-father, Greene likens his fate to that of being "Quisling's son." Edward sackrille-west once called Greene "the electric hare whom the Greyhound critics are not meant to catch." His pursuit fiction was criminal-centered; his Catholic novels skirted heresy. He described the Human beings who have sense of sins in pity. Critics have delighted in underscoring the atmosphere of tawdry, monotonous degeneracy which prevails in Green's fiction and which they call Greenland and the writer think that. It is not depend on one's will. Betrayal has always been the capital sin in Greens book. Here men have sense of sins through his life, and Greene tried to resolve it by God's mercy.
