This paper examined the concept of Yuso(流蘇), the process of change, and the use purpose of Yuso, which was recorded in the literature on Yuso since the end of Joseon. In addition, we recognized the characteristics of Yuso decorated in present Bier, and actually noticed Kwon Hyeok Won Bier, which remained in the form of old Bier, analyzed and reproduced the material and formative characteristics of Bier Yuso.
Yuso referred to the thing hung the tassel down on knot made by weaving colored silk, bird`s tail, color thread, etc. or hung the tassel on head part of braided thread in the early days of Joseon, and depending on decorating things, if Yuso was decorated with five lines of beads, it was called ‘Ohju(five beads) Yuso’, if with seven lines of beads, called ‘Chilju(seven beads) Yuso’, and with knots, called ‘Knot Yuso’. In modern times, it became known as a ‘Knot Decoration’ or a decoration with a tassel at the end by tying a knot in a red braid.
Yuso was used in Yeo(轝), San(繖), Jangdo(粧刀), Ceremonial Flags, Musical instruments(樂器), Insignia(揮帳), Eojin(御眞), Boin(寶印), etc. and Yuso decorated with the knot was used in hanging scroll(簇子), footrest, curtain hanger, coat hanger, etc for interior decoration.
Bier Yuso was decorated with Myungjung Gongpo Yuso, Angjang Yuso, Daebong Yuso, Sobong Yuso. In Kwon Hyeok Won Bier, Daebong Yuso was hung in the phoenix beak of the four corner of Bier, and Sobong Yuso was hung in Ungak(cloud inscript, Pancheob).
