The purpose of this study is to present basic data for identification, treatment, prevention and intervention on child abuse. The author analyzed the actual conditions on physical abuse through the random sampled respondents of 1,045 primary school children in Seoul. The questionnaires were composed of general information of families, forms of physical abuse, etc. According to the severity and the frequency of being battered among the sampled children during the last one year, three groups were identified : namely the unbattered, the intermediate and the seriously battered. Of the total respondents, 67.3 % of the children were intermediately battered and 9.4% were seriously battered by their family members. The experience of being battered was more serious in the lower social status families and the child bettering was evaluated to be closely related to other forms of family violence. The psychosomatic, psychological and behavioral manifestations were serious in the seriously battered children. The following suggestions are presented for identification, intervention and prevention of child abuse in Korea. The distinctive definition on child abuse and its scope pertinent to Korean cultural situation should be established. Either enactment of the law for prevention of child abuse and neglect or amendment of related laws should be provided. In order to identify the abused cases or suspectible cases, the mandatory reporting system should be provided. Various education programmes should be provided for the parents who have child abuse experiences. The networking of various organizations in the community should be formed to prevent the child abuse.
