      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper discusses the contribution of socio-cultural and economic factors to gender inequality in education in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The authors employed purely desk review of various documents on girls’ education. The paper shows how various factors hinder girls’ enrolment and participation in education at various levels in developing countries. The paper puts it clearly that when countries are grouped into regions, the SSA seems to be the weakest performer in attaining the MDGs timely. The paper suggests that there is a need for establishing gender-informed policy interventions such as introduction of targeted programmes set specifically to boost girls’ education.
