Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, 2D derivatives such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and transition metal dichalcogenides have been highlighted due to their unusual physical and chemical properties, facilitating various unprecedented device applications. However, most researches have been limited to proof of concept demonstrations with small sized 2D flakes. Therefore, large-area 2D materials are highly required for real applications. Here, we review the synthesis of large-area hBN films. In this review, three methods to obtain monolayer and multilayer hBN films are discussed accordingly. The self-collimated growth of large-area single-crystal monolayer hBN film reported recently is discussed as well.
