20세기 전반 彦陽의 小農社會 = The Peasant Society of Eonyang in the First Part of 20th Century

국문 초록 (Abstract)

경남 울주군 언양면의 토지대장과 호적에서 관찰되는 20세기 전반 토지소유와 농민의 기본 형태는 자작농 체제였다. 산간부 도작지대라는 자연환경이 그 배경을 이루었다. 통설적 이해와 달리 일제의 지배기에 언양면의 농가경제는 오히려 안정되었다. 대량의 인구가 일본으로 건너간 것이 주요 원인이었다. 언양장을 중심으로 시장경제가 발전한 것도 다른 한편의 원인이었다. 무엇보다 중요한 요인은 법제로서 가족의 성립과 가족 규모의 확대였다. 그에 따라 동성의 친족집단이 확산되었다. 가족결합의 강화와 친족집단의 확산은 양반과 상민 신분 간의 경제적 격차와 사회적 차별을 해소하는 데 도움이 되었다. 20세기 전반 언양의 소농사회는 근대적 전환과 유교적 전환이 어울린 복선의 전환을 경험하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

According to the land register and family register of Eonyang-myon(彦陽面), Gyeongnam(慶南) province, the dominant forms of agricultural production and landownership during the first half of the 20th century consisted of independent farmers who cultivated their own lands. The natural environment surrounding Eonyang-myon, namely the mountainous paddy area, formed its main background. Furthermore, contrary to the traditional understanding, the peasant economy became stabilized under the Japanese rule. Much population flowed out to Japan, which
subduced rural surplus population considerably. The development of rural periodic market on Eonyang-myon contributed also to the stabilization of peasant households. The most important factor was institutional. The civil law proclaimed in 1914 created the legal category of family. It strengthened familial tie and enlarged family scale. It helped families consolidate their kinship relations. Most of rural families became more egalitarian in their economic and social status. The traditional social discrimination between Yanbang(兩班) and Sangmin (常民) disappeared concomitantly. The 20th century history of Eonyang-myon was not merely the modernization just started, but also the prolonged Confucian transformation which had started several centuries ago in Korean history.
