This study attempted to briefly examine the activities of church works or the ministers of the early Korean Presbyterian Church, and to research the formation and development of the appointment system of church officer related to them, focusing on the Hap Dong side. Missionaries who entered Korea enthusiastically spread the gospel based on the word of God. In addition, they raised Korean believers as partners through education and training, and established and developed the Korean Presbyterian Church. In Korea, where language, culture, and customs are different, their evangelical ministry desperately needed the cooperation and dedication of Korean saints. As early church leaders or ministers, there were assistants in Bible translation, Colporteur, Bible Woman, Helper, Leader, Elders, Pastors, Deacons, and Exhorter. The dedication of these and missionaries made today’s growth of Korean church possible.
In formally establishing these leaders and ministers, the systems of appointment through the rules and constitution of the General Assembly was requested. Initially, the ‘Presbyterian Northern Mission Rules and By-laws of 1891’ and the ‘Korean Presbyterian Church Regulations’ in 1907 were enacted. And then, the ‘Constitution of The General Assembly of Presbyte- rian Church in Korea(1922)’ was enacted and revised several times, and today it has reached the ‘Constitution of the General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in Korea(2018)’. In the process, the appointment system has been formed and developed in the political part of the Constitution. The Constitution has been based on the text of the Bible, doctrines, and the identity of the denomination, and has continued to change and reform while considering reformed theology and actual pastoral practices.
