Tennessee Williams는 이 작품의 서언에서 다음과 같이 말하고 있다. I have never quit working in this one, not even now. It never went into the trunk, it always stayed on the work bench, and I am not presenting it now because I have run out of ideas or material for completely new work. I am because I have run out of ideas or material for completely new work. I am offering it this season because I honestly believe that it is finally finished. What is much more important, I believe that I have now finally managed to say in it what I wanted to say. and I feel that it now has in it a sort of emotional bridge between those early years and my present state of existence as a playwright. 즉 이 작품은 그이 야심에 찬 역작임을 시사하고 있으나, 이 작품의 공연성과는 그의 기대치에 미치지 못하였음을 그의 회고록중에서 발견할 수 있다.
