왜 '느슨한' 교회가 성장하는가? = 합리적 선택론에서 본 한국 그리스도교의 교세변화

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 1995-2005년 동안 한국에서 가톨릭과 개신교의 교세변화 추이가 상반되어 나타나는 현상을 교회의 조직적 특성에 초점을 맞추어 합리적 분석틀에서 설명을 시도한다. 먼저, 한국이 ?종교자유 시장상황?에 놓여 있다는 점을 고려하여, 기존의 개인 합리적 접근을 통한 분석 특히 이안나코네의 논의를 비판적으로 검토하는 것에서 출발한다. 이안나코네의 논의를 한국의 경험 사례에 적용해 보면, 성장하는 가톨릭과 쇠퇴하는 개신교는 조직의 관대함과 엄격함을 기준으로 구분지어 설명가능하며, ?엄격한 교회가 강하다?라는 그의 기본적인 주장은 한국사례에서도 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 미국사례와는 달리 한국에서는 조직적 엄격함이 곧 조직의 확장으로 연결되지 않으며 오히려 ?관대한? 교회 즉 가톨릭이 성장한다는 반대의 결과를 나타내고 있다. 본고는 이 상반된 결과의 요인을 미국과 한국의 이질적인 종교 환경에서 찾았다. 미국과는 달리 한국에서는 잠재적 신자군일 수 있는 非종교인구가 차지하는 비중이 크며, 이점이 이안나코네의 이론을 한국에 직접 적용하는데 한계로 작용한다고 보았다. 종교적 시장상황에 따른 조직의 성장과 쇠퇴현상을 좀 더 효과적으로 설명하기 위해서, 본 연구는 허쉬만의 ?이탈?과 ?항의? 메커니즘을 접목시켜 한국사례를 설명하는데 이용하였다. 이안나코네와 허쉬만의 분석틀을 기초로 하여 KGSS자료를 분석한 결과, 한국에서 가톨릭 집단이 잠재적 신자들에게 호감을 주고 기존 신자들에게 만족을 주는 관대한 교회였기 때문에 성장할 수 있었다는 분석결과를 얻었다. 본고는 한국의 종교현상에 대하여 개인 합리적 선택에 기초하는 논리적 분석틀을 제시하면서, 동시에 분석틀의 적실성에 대한 역사적 맥락의 중요성을 강조한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to explain the current puzzling trend in the membership growths of Catholic and Protestant churches from a rational choice perspective, focusing on their organizational traits. We start by critically reviewing previous rational choice models, especially that of Iannaconne, which have been successfully applied to the American case. Iannaconne?s main argument that organizational ?strictness? could make a church ?strong? by effectively mitigating a free-rider problem is partially confirmed in the Korean case. However, contrasted with the American case, more lenient Catholic church is recently growing faster than more strict Protestant churches in Korea. Keeping the basic rational framework, we try to explain this contrasting result by noticing the different sizes of non-believers, who are regarded as ?potential church members?, between two countries. By utilizing Hirschman?s scheme of ?exit and voice?, we provide new analytical model to effectively explain the current Korean religious situation. We derived some theoretical hypotheses from our model, and checked it with empirical data. We confirmed that our model more systematically explain the current church trend in Korea. In addition to solving the current empirical ?puzzle?, this paper has a theoretical significance in providing a new rational framework to analyze a religious phenomenon.
