20세기 영문학에 나타난 ＂어두운 에피퍼니＂ -『파리대왕』을 중심으로 = "The Dark Epiphany" of The Lord of the Files

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The twentieth century has been a bad period for Pelagians, those who confidently proclaim the virtues and intelligence of human beings. Modern English literary works seem, at the whole, to support Augustine against Pelagius, emphasizing as they do the frailty and nastiness of men. The most outstanding one of those works is The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. His novel recapitulates in a fable immediately resonant to a twentieth sensibility the themes that originate in Swift. The theme of the work can be described as the change from innocence, which is the innocence of the self, to tragic knowledge. The tragic knowledge is that evil is inherent in most men and, as Golding himself suggests in his Hot Gates, “human beings produce it(evil) as bees produce honey.” This is “the dark epiphany": a realization of sin, sinisterness, and evil with no promise of reprieve. Proceeding from this fact, Golding of course believes in human guilt and the human sense of innocence lost. He, however, also believes in hope of redemption by giving Ralph opportunity to survive.
