The Corrected Text, ambitiously efdited by a group of international Joyce scholars led by Hans Walter Gabler, has been considered to be the most authoritative edition since its publication in 1986. The book was prefaced by Richard Ellmann. Considerign his weight in the Joyce scholarship and his function as advisor in this new textual project, his writing of the preface seems very appropriate for the occasion. Some of the behind-the-screen episodes, however, point to the possibility that Ellmann might have done the job without the enthusiasm expected of him. One such oblique counter-evidence is his objection to include the hither-to excluded love motif in the Scylla and Charybdis, which was not accepted by the editors.
