국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1944년부터 1989년까지 불가리아 사회주의 체제하에서 축구가 정치 및 사회적 도구로 활용된 양상을 다각도로 분석한다. 불가리아 정부는 축구를 통해 국민 단합과 사회주의 이념의 내면화를 꾀했으며, 선수들은 ‘사회주의 영웅’으로 선전되었다. 국제 경기 성과는 체제 우월성을 홍보하는 주요 수단으로 간주되었고, 이에 따라 공산당은 축구에 막대한 자원과 집중적인 이념 교육을 투입하였다. 본 논문에서는 구조기능주의, 갈등이론, 상징적 상호작용론, 비판이론을 포괄하는 분석틀을 통해, 축구가 지배 이념을 강화하면서도 저항의 장이 될 수 있는 이중적 성격을 갖춘다는 사실을 밝히고자 한다. 불가리아 축구 정책이 정치 체제와 결합되는 과정을 조명하고, 이를 통해 불가리아 스포츠 정책이 사회 전반에 미친 영향을 재평가한다.

This study comprehensively analyzes how football was utilized as a political and social tool under Bulgaria’s socialist regime from 1944 to 1989. The Bulgarian government sought to achieve national unity and internalization of socialist ideology through football, with athletes being propagandized as ‘socialist heroes.’ International sporting achievements were considered a primary means of promoting the superiority of the system, and consequently, the Communist Party invested substantial resources and intensive ideological education in football.
This paper aims to reveal the dual nature of football—as both a reinforcer of dominant ideology and a potential space for resistance—through an analytical framework encompassing structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and critical theory. By examining how Bulgarian football policy became intertwined with the political system, this study reevaluates the broader social impact of sports policies in Communist states across Central and Eastern Europe.
