상 범주의 의미와 종류에 관한 몇 문제 = Some issues on the Definition and Classification of Aspects

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 상 범주의 의미와 종류에 대한 그간의 기술에 몇 가지 문제제기를 하는 데 목적이 있다. 본고의 문제의식은, ‘상황의 내적 시간 구성을 바라보는 다른 방법’이라는 그간의 ‘상’의 정의가, 실제 상 형식의 의미가 모두 포함되거나 설명될 만큼 충분히 넓지도 않고 명시적이지도 않다는 데서 출발한다. 예컨대 완결상과 비완결상의 대립이 있는 언어와는 달리 이들 대립이 없는 언어에서 완결상이나 비완결상은 그 개념조차 분명하지 않다는 점, 진행상, 지속상이 상황의 내적 시간을 바라본다는 것은 직관적으로 이해되나, 결과상이나 반복상, 습관상 등이 바라본다는 상황의 내적 시간이 무엇인지는 상대적으로 모호하다는 점 등이다.
본고는 이런 문제들과 관련하여 완결상과 비완결상은 이들 상 대립이 있는 언어로 한정해서 쓰고, 이들 상 대립이 없는 언어에서는 굳이 이들 개념을 동원할 이유가 없음을 살펴본다. 또한 진행상, 지속상, 습관상 등을 비완결상의 일종으로 분류해 온 데 대해, 상 대립이 없는 언어에서 이들이 비완결상의 일종인지 증명할 방법이 없을 때가 많으며 이런 분류가 가져오는 이점도 없을 때가 있으므로 이런 시도는 신중해야 한다는 것을 밝힌다. 아울러 상황을 바라본다는 의미의 관점상은 문법적 상의 유개념으로 그리 적절하지 않으며, 굳이 이들을 따로 묶을 술어가 필요하다면 각각 국면상과 양화상이 될 수 있음을 논의한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper deals with some issues on the definition and classification of aspects. The definition of aspect, as different ways of viewing the internal temporal constituency of a situation, isn’t broad enough to cover the full range of grammatical aspects and also isn’t explicit enough to be able to cover all of their meanings. For instance, the phrase ‘viewing’ can be useful in describing the meaning of the Perfective/Imperfective opposition in Slavic languages and Romance languages, but ‘Resultatives’ ‘Habituals’, ‘Iteratives’, etc. of languages which do not have that kind of grammatical aspectual opposition cannot be explained in terms of the concept of ‘viewing something’. There is not sufficient evidence to demonstrate that progressive, habitual, etc. are sub-types of imperfective aspect; furthermore there aren’t any advantages in defining them as types of imperfective aspects in individual languages. Moreover, aspects usually refer to just a phase of development in a given situation, not whether speakers view the situation from the inside or outside. This suggests that it’s more useful to restrict viewpoint aspects as Perfective/Imperfective opposition, while classifying Ingressive, Progressive, Completive, Resultative, etc. as phasal aspect that specify the phase of development of a given situation, and Habitual, Iterative, Semelfactive, etc. as quantificational aspects that express the frequency of occurrence of a situation.
