Vidarabine(or adenine arabinoside ; 9-beta-D-arabinofuranesyladenine;are-A ; Vire-A) is a purine nucleoside with antiviral activity against influenza, pox, rhabdoviruses, oncornaviruses and especially the herpes viruses.
Although vidarabine has been used successfully in the treatment of life threatening herpes simplex encephalitis, neonatal herpes simplex infection, varicella zosier infection in the immunocompromised hosts. acyclovir had been shown to be superior in these conditions and therefere has replaced vidarabine for these settings.
Other applications for vidarabine are mucocutaneous herpes simplex inflection in immunosuppressed patients, the topical treatment of herpes simplex keratitis and hepaatitis and hepatitis B virus infection. Disadvantages of vidarabine are its poor solubility that necessitates large amounts of intravenous fluids for administration and neurotoxicities.
