The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of hospital revenue increase by shortening length of stay after examining of medical charge by details of treatment. In doing so, herniated lumbar disc is chosen and the aspect of medical charge for it by length of stay is first examined.
169 patients who were discharged from an University Hospital of 1000 beds scale from January 1,1997 to December 31,1997 after treatment for herniated lumbar disc were made the subject of this study.
The results of medical charges by details of treatment and length of stay were investigated according to operated cases or unoperated cases. Medical charge for herniated lumbar disc in case of operation was low on the first day of admission. However, it was high on the second and the third day of admission, while it rapidly decreased on the forth day of admission. It gradually decreased after the forth day and displayed finally constant level.
The effect of annual revenue per bed by shortening of the average length of stay by one day, the annual revenue increased 1,678,000 won in case of operated patients, while it increased 793,000 won in case of unoperated patients.
