해외자원봉사활동의 임파워먼트 효과에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 청소년들의 해외자원봉사활동이 급증하였지만 참가 청소년들에 대한 실증적인 효과성 연구가 부재하다. 이에 본 연구는 해외자원봉사활동에 참여한 중?고등학생 및 대학생들을 대상으로 그들의 사회적 책임성과 향후 봉사활동 지속의지에 미치는 영향, 즉 임파워먼트 효과를 살펴보았다. 조사대상은 2011년 7~8월 여름방학동안 몽골, 필리핀, 캄보디아, 라오스, 베트남 및 아프리카 케냐 등 6개국에 파견되어 약 12일간 해외자원봉사활동을 행한 227명이며, 이들을 대상으로 사전-사후 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사결과, 봉사활동 전과 비교하였을 때 봉사활동 참가 청소년들의 사회적 책임성과 봉사활동 지속의지에 통계적으로 유의미한 변화가 있었다. 또한 임파워먼트 효과에 영향을 미친 세부요인은 해외자원봉사활동기간 동안 자원봉사자의 적극적 태도였다. 즉, 자원봉사활동을 적극적으로 수행한 참여자일수록, 자원봉사활동 전보다 사회적 책임감이 높아지고 향후 자원봉사활동 지속의지도 향상되었다. 또한 중?고등학생의 임파워먼트 효과가 대학생보다 큰 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

International volunteering by young people has been growing rapidly in Korea. However, few studies, if any, explore the effects of international volunteering on these young people’s sense of empowerment. The aim of this study is to explore 1) whether or not international volunteering has an effect on the empowerment of young people who participate in these activities and 2) the socioeconomic and program factors and attributes of these participants which may influence or even cause these empowerment effects. The study made use of a pretest?posttest survey, using 227 young people (middle school to university?level students) who had experience of participating in international volunteering programs in Asia and Africa during the summer of 2011. The findings are: 1) participants’ responses in relation to social responsibility and the will to continue to volunteer rose significantly between the pretest and posttest 2) a “positive attitude” during the volunteering period had a significant effect on empowerment when comparing pretests and posttests. This contrasts with domestic studies which found that experience, prior education, as well as the participation process itself (amongst other factors), had significant effects on empowerment, and 3) the younger the ages of the volunteers, the higher the empowerment effects.
