The effects of Astragali radix aqua-acupuncture solution (ARAS) and Astragali radix water-extraced solution (ARWS) on the phase Ⅰ enzyme and carcinogen-DNA adduct formation were examined. There were 11.3% and 13.4% inhibition in the activity of cytochrome P4501A1 enzyme with the treatment 3× and 5× of ARAS, respectively. At concentration of 0.1× and 1× ARAS, the binding of [3H]B[a]P metabolites to DNA of NCTC-clone 1469 cell was inhibited by 6.9%, 29.3%, respectively. These results suggest that ARAS has chemopreventive potential by inhibiting cytochrome P4501A1 activity and benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adduct formation.
