영국 빅토리아 시대 섹슈얼리티에 대한 과학적 담론 = 남녀 클럽 (1885-1889)을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 영국 빅토리아 시대 남녀클럽에서 논의되었던 섹슈얼리티에 대한 과학적 담론의 성격을 살펴보는 것이다. 클럽의 목적은 “과학적이고, 실증적인 역사적 방법론”을 이용하여 새로운 성 담론 즉 규범적인 이성애를 형성하여 여성문제를 해결하는 것이었다. 클럽에서 논의된 주제들은 “여성문제.” “인간의 성적 욕망,” “결혼제도” 그리고 “매매춘”에 관한 것이었다. 클럽은 4년간 36회의 모임을 가졌으며, 클럽에서 논의된 여성문제의 성격과 성 담론은 남성위주 대중매체를 통해 하나의 ‘과학적 성 담론’으로 알려졌을 뿐만 아니라 대중 속으로 스며들었다. 그러나 과학적 성 담론은 주로 남성회원들의 목소리였다. 여성회원들의 주장은 어떻게 과학적 담론이 되지 못했으며, 나아가 대중담론으로 전개되지 못했을까?

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay explores the feature of "The Men and Women's Club" to talk about Victorian sexuality in Britain of the 1880s. The Men and Women's Club shifts from the public discussions of sexual danger to the semiprivate debates of a discussion club of freethinking men and women, who were intent on exploring the history and future possibility for heterosexual relations. The aim of the club was to present an ideal heterosexuality to the Victorian public. A dialectic between sexual possibility and sexual danger revealed different attitudes towards masculinity and feminity, especially towards heterosexuality, on the part of men and women of the professional middle class. Over its four-year life span the club discussed a host of topics: form the position of women among early Indian Buddhists, women of old Russia and sex relations among the Romans through to more contentious and comtemporary considerations of the sex instinct, morality, marriage, prostitution, family limitation and women's emancipation. Although these issues were programed for the improvement of the women's situation, men's voice became much influential in debates. Women's voices were always refused in the end of debates within the club. This essay also explores the inequality of club discourse between female and male members.
