The reign of King Wideok-wang was indeed a turning point, which shows us the political changes that occurred during the Sabi era. Baekje’s decision to transfer the capital to Sabi provided the dynasty with some breathing room to renovate itself, yet its defeat at the Gwansan-seong Battle of 554 again rendered the political condition of Baekje significantly unstable.
King Wideok-wang who newly ascended to the throne at this time, was facing a daunting task as well. He put a lot of efforts to stabilize the kingdom and boost his authority. He also reinforced Baekje’s relationship with China(instead of Japan), as such relationship would help the Baekje people to monitor the situation of Koguryo, and prepare a confrontation with Silla.
Yet when King Wideok-wang died, he was succeeded not by his own son but by King Hye-wang, as the lineage that led to King Hye-wang had been expanding its power during Wideok-wang’s reign. The emergence of the Hye-wang power was mainly enabled by its negotiations with Japan. Hye-wang himself had once been dispatched to Japan on a mission to request the sending of troops, and during his mission he acquainted himself with the Soga faction in Japan. He also returned to Baekje with some of those Japanese allies, who served as a foundation of a lasting relationship between Baekje and Japan. In the meantime, members of the Hye-wang lineage also established a marital relationship with the Iksan region faction, which later emerged as a central force since the mid-6th century, and that certainly helped the Hye-wang lineage to gain more power as well. Hye-wang’s success was a considerably important historical event, as it formed the power base of King Mu-wang as well, who later led the resurgence of Baekje’s power and prosperity in the Sabi era, succeeding King Seong-wang.
