그렇지만 그렇지 않은: 김나영 + 그레고리 마스 인터뷰 = That’s right, but it’s not all. : An Interview with Nayoungim+Gregory Maass

국문 초록 (Abstract)

수많은 이데올로기가 난무한 20세기 예술적 경향과 비교하면 오늘날 예술은 개인주의가 그 무엇보다도 우선하는 경향이 있다. 이것은 타인과의 유기적 교류에 적극 개입할 수 있는 선행조건이다.
김나영과 그레고리 마스(이후 김+마스)는 2인 1조로 설치미술 작업을,하는 팀이다. ‘개인’의 범주 안에 이미 서로 다른 문화권인 한국과 독일에서 온 두 사람이 속해 있어 작품의 태생부터 단일문화권의 영역, 밖에 놓이게 된다. 한국과 유럽에서 전시를 열고 지금은 노르웨이에서 전시 준비 중인 김+마스는 방문한 지역의 특성을 작업에 반영하는 일을 소홀히 하지 않는다. 이들에게 있어 지역적 특성을 파악한다는 것은 국가나 민족 별로 나누어지는 지식적 이해가 아니라, 그 지역에 속한 사람에 대한 이해다. 처한 환경이나 상황에 따라 특정한 태도를 보이거나 반응하며 살아가는 사람들이 모여 만들어내는 개별성을 작업에 반영하는 것이다.
본 인터뷰의 목적은 김+마스의 작업에 관한 생각을 한국을 비롯한 세계 각지에서 연 전시를 통해 알아보고, 이들이 특정 지역을 어떻게 이해하고 작업에 표현하였는지 살펴보는 데 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

While the 20th century was rife with numerous artistic ideologies, individualism is the trend of today's art world. The trend is the prerequisite for making 'organic' exchanges with others.
The artist duo, Nayoungim and Gregory Maass (Gim+Maass), make installation pieces. One is from Korea and the other one came from Germany. Their collaboration has two different cultural genealogy and ethnic background. Moreover, Gim+Maass travel around the world (Now, they have an exhibition in Norway), try to have site-specific conversation, and reflect certain regional traits in their works. For them, the site-specificity means an attempt to understand the people living in
each area not to achieve any national or ethnical knowledge. They reflect the individual human behaviours; their adaptations and responses to the living environment.
In this interview, I will introduce the exhibitions that Gim+Maass had in several places in the world. I will examine the thoughts they had in mind and how they try to understand the local sites and created each installation accordingly.
