The purpose of this study is to describe the theoretical discussion meaning construction with media reading in social studies instruction. The contents are as follows;
First, the meaning construction in social studies instruction is defined. Second, the concrete process of meaning construction with media reading is considered. From the perspective of the former, the importance of meaning construction is addressed as an issue with the emphasis of the changing socio-cultural circumstances around students. The viewpoint of culture study as the theoretical evidence, is considered. This paper deals with the process of meaning construction through reconsideration on reading various media. From the perspective of the latter, reading media, creating and exchanging and contextualization of meanings and the mode of meaning representation are examined. As the methods for contextualization, classification, clues, symbols, and examples are reviewed. As the mode for meaning representation, active mode, iconic mode, and symbol mode are reviewed.
This study can provide a good standard in reading media and constructing meanings for social studies instruction. But a lot of variables interact in real instruction activities and it is important to create theories with the reflective thinking on the real activities.
