사운드 스토리텔링을 통한 이데올로기 신화 해체: 넷플릭스 영화 <로마>의 기호학적 분석 = Deconstructing Ideological Myths through Sound Storytelling: A Semiotic Analysis of the Netflix Film <Roma>

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 알폰소 쿠아론의 넷플릭스 영화 <로마>를 중심으로, 사운드가 영화의 내러티브와 이데올로기 형성에서 핵심적 역할을 수행하는 방식을 규명하고, 이를 비판적으로 해체하는 과정을 분석한다. 멕시코의 지배적 이데올로기를 강화하거나 은폐하는 사운드의 역할과, 이를 통해 전달되는 사회적 메시지를 통해 수용자가 이를 어떻게 인식하는지를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 롤랑 바르트의 신화론과 기호학을 바탕으로, 영화 속 사운드를 언어적 층위(기표와 기의)와 신화적 층위(사회적 신화의 형성과 해체)로 나누어 분석하였다. 주요 사례로 영화에서 반복적으로 사용된 비행기 소음, 물청소 소리, 폭동 소리 등을 선정하여, 사운드와 이미지가 결합하는 방식과 그 과정에서 형성되는 사회적 맥락과 메시지를 심층적으로 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 사운드 스토리텔링이 사회적 신화를 구축하고 이를 비판적으로 해체하는 과정을 구체적으로 밝히며, 사운드가 단순한 배경음이 아닌 상징적 기호로 작동한다는 점을 논증한다. 나아가 사운드와 기호학의 융합적 분석이 내러티브 중심 영화 연구에 새로운 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study focuses on Alfonso Cuarón’s Netflix film Roma to examine how sound plays a central role in shaping the film’s narrative and ideology while critically deconstructing this process. The study explores how sound reinforces or obscures Mexico’s dominant ideologies and how these elements influence the audience’s perception through the social messages they convey. Using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, the study divides its analysis into two levels: linguistic (signifier and signified) and mythological (the formation and deconstruction of social myths). The analysis focuses on recurring sounds such as airplane noise, cleaning water, and protest roars to reveal how sound and imagery interact to create social meaning and context. This study demonstrates that sound in storytelling not only constructs social myths but also dismantles them, showing that sound functions as a symbolic tool rather than a mere background element. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating sound and semiotic analysis into narrative film studies, offering new perspectives for understanding the role of sound in cinematic storytelling.
