Many consumers are going on diets and buying diet foods in different sizes and package images that may help them increase their self-control and manages their consumption. So, this research examined the effect of the type of package image and the levels of dietary restraint on consumer responses(i.e. calories perception, fat-content perception) focusing on the mini-multi-package product. Different from previous studies, we focused on the effect of health image to package rather than package size. Also, we postulated that the level of dietary restraint(restrained eaters vs. unrestrained eaters) plays an essential moderating role in relationship between health image of package and estimation of calories and fat-content.
We conducted two studies to support our hypothesis. First, consumers are focused on the package image to estimate calories in the case of small package size like a mini-multi-package product. Also, consumers are relatively focused on the package image due to the prominence effect when the package size was small(vs. large). According to the results of two-way interactions, there was no difference of calories estimation in case of unrestrained eaters regardless of the type of package image. But, restrained eaters high rated the products calories and fat-content when the package included a health image.
Finally, we found that the goal activation plays an essential mediating role in relationship between health image of package and estimation of calories and fat-content. We may draw several theoretical and practical contributions. Theoretically, we developed a step further in research in health image, package size, and its related studies.
