Tyler and Jackson(2014)의 다측면 경찰정당성 측정 도구의 타당화 연구* = Validation Study of Tyler and Jackson(2014)’s Multidimensional Police Legitimacy Measurement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

경찰정당성 이론은 경찰이 시민들로부터정당성을 확보한다면 시민들이 자발적으로법률을 준수하고 또한 경찰의 지시에도 잘따르고 협력도 잘 이루어진다고 주장한다.
이러한 긍정적 측면 때문에 관련된 연구가증가하고 있다.
한편, 경찰정당성 연구는 국내외적으로개념에 대한 조작적 정의가 통일되어 있지않아 학자마다 다른 측정 도구로 연구를 진행하여 혼란이 있어왔다. 또한 국내에서 진행된 대부분의 연구는 경찰정당성 측정도구에 대한 국내 타당화를 거치지 않은 채 해외연구의 측정 문항을 번역하여 사용하여 경찰정당성 측정 도구에 대한 타당화 연구가필요하였다.
본 연구는 국내외 선행연구 분석을 통하여Tyler and Jackson(2014)연구의 조작적정의를 대표성 있는 측정도구로 제안하고이들의 경찰정당성 측정 도구를 한국어로번역하고 타당화하는 것을 목적으로 연구를진행하였다. 타당화 검증을 위하여 문항검증, 이차 확인적 요인분석, 수렴타당도 그리고 구성타당도 검증을 실시하였다.
분석결과 경찰정당성을 구성하는 세 가지측면인 경찰(지시)준수 의무감, 경찰신뢰, 그리고 경찰 도덕적 일치는 문항 간 내적 신뢰도가 문제가 없어서 문항분석 결과는 경찰정당성 하위 측면들이 척도로서 문제가 없음을 보여주었다. 두 번째로 이차 확인적 요인분석 검증 결과 Tyler and Jackson(2014) 에서 제시하였던 세 가지 하위 측면들이 경찰정당성으로 향하는 경로들에서 모두 유의미함을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 수렴타당도와구성타당도 또한 문제 없음을 확인하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Police Legitimacy Theory argues that if the police secure legitimacy from citizens, people will voluntarily comply with the law, follow police directives, and cooperate effectively. Due to these positive aspects, research on this topic has been increasing.
However, studies on police legitimacy have faced confusion both domestically and internationally due to the lack of a standardized operational definition. Scholars have used different measurement tools, leading to inconsistencies. In addition, most domestic studies have used translated measurement items from foreign research without undergoing proper validation for the local context, highlighting the need for validation studies on police legitimacy measurement tools.
This study aims to propose a representative measurement tool based on the operational definition of Tyler and Jackson (2014) through an analysis of previous domestic and international studies. It also seeks to translate and validate their police legitimacy measurement tool in Korean. For validation, the study conducted item examination, second-order confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, and construct validity tests.
The analysis results indicate that the three components of police legitimacy —obligation to comply with police (directives), trust in the police, and moral alignment with the police—exhibited no issues with internal reliability among items. The item analysis confirmed that these sub-dimensions of police legitimacy function properly as scales. Second, the second-order confirmatory factor analysis verified that the three sub-dimensions proposed by Tyler and Jackson (2014) were all statistically significant in their paths toward police legitimacy.
