가상화 기술을 적용한 서버 통합 연구 = A study on the virtualization for server consolidation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 비즈니스 환경이 빠르게 변화함에 따라 기업의 모든 전략적 비즈니스 결정은 IT 부서의 지원을 요구하게 되었다. 이에 IT 시스템은 다양한 지원요구를 충족하기 위해 복잡화 및 다변화 되면서 서버 수가 급속하게 증가하게 됐고, 이로 인해 데이터센터에서의 공간 부족 문제, 서버 증가 및 관리 인원 증가로 인한 유지 관리 비용 또한 늘어나고 있다. IDC에 따르면, IT 예산 중 IT 관리 운영비용은 신규 시스템 비용의 3배의 비용을 사용할 뿐만 아니라 신규 시스템의 도입 비용이 연간 3% 성장에 그치고 있는데 비해, 시스템의 관리 운영비용은 연간 성장률은 10%에 이른다. 또한 IT 예산 중 단지 10% 정도만이 IT 혁신과 새로운 기능개발에 사용되고 있다. 즉, 기업 내 IT 예산 중 대부분이 시스템 운영 및 유지관리 비용에 소비되고 있음을 말해주고 있다.
이런 문제에 대한 방안으로 서버 한 대를 여러 대처럼 다양하게 활용할 수 있는 기술을 구현하는 가상화에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있으며, 가상화를 도입하려는 기업들이 점점 늘어나는 추세이다
이에 본 논문에서는 IT비용 절감을 위한 효율적인 방안으로 서버 가상화 기술을 알아보고 직접 운영 중인 IT 인프라 환경에 서버 가상화 기술을 적용하여 구성해 봄으로써 하드웨어의 자원 활용률을 극대화하고, 시스템의 가용성 향상 및 비용절감 등의 효과가 있었음을 알 수 있었다.

A Study on the Virtualization for Server Consolidation

With rapidly changing business environment, support from the IT division became essential for most companies to make strategic decisions. Consequently, IT system has become complicated and diversified to meet various demands, leading to a surge in the number of servers. The increased number of servers and staff not only caused lack of space in data center, but also pushed up the cost of maintenance. According to IDC, IT management and operation spend three times the cost of the new system out of the total IT budget. While the budget for the introduction of new system grows only 3% annually, the cost of the system management shows the annual growth rate of 10 %. Only 10 percent of IT budget is being used for IT innovation and the development of new functions. In other words, most of the IT budget in a company are spent on the operation and maintenance of the system.
As a solution to this issue, virtualization is attracting much attention. Virtualization refers to a technology that enables one server to play multiple roles. An increasing number of companies are adopting virtualization.
Against this backdrop, this paper studied server virtualization technology as an effective solution to reduce IT costs by applying the virtualization technology to the directly operated IT infrastructure. In conclusion, the study revealed that the technology maximized resource utilization rate of hard ware, enhanced the availability of the system, and saved costs.
